Short answer

Cracks on the feet usually form when dry, thickened skin is exposed to pressure, friction, inflammation, or infection that weakens its flexibility.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be behind the cracks

Heels carry repeated load, and dry skin can become hard before it splits. Open-backed shoes, long periods standing, friction, and bathing habits may make the heel edge more vulnerable. Athlete’s foot can cause scaling and fissures, especially between the toes. Atopic Dermatitis may produce itchy, inflamed, dry skin, while Psoriasis can create thicker plaques that crack under movement. Cracks may sting or bleed when they extend deeper. Their location, itch, scale, redness, and recurrence help a clinician narrow the cause.

What to do at home

Wash gently, dry carefully between the toes, and apply a plain moisturising ointment to intact dry areas after washing. Emollient Therapy can soften thick skin and support the barrier. Wear supportive footwear that reduces heel friction, and avoid cutting calluses with blades or using harsh acids without advice. Keep open fissures clean and covered, and do not share towels or footwear if a fungal infection is possible.

When to seek care

See a clinician if cracks are deep, repeatedly bleed, fail to improve, or come with marked itch, scaling, or inflamed plaques. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, increasing pain, or fever. People with diabetes, reduced sensation, or poor circulation should have foot cracks assessed early because a small wound may be harder to notice or heal.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern fits dryness, fungal infection, eczema, psoriasis, or pressure; which moisturiser is suitable; and whether a sample or prescription is needed. Ask how to protect a fissure during walking and which warning signs require review.

Questions people ask

Can cracked heels be caused by more than dryness?

Yes. Pressure, footwear, eczema, psoriasis, and fungal infection can all contribute to cracking or make dry skin harder to heal.

Should I cut away cracked skin?

No. Cutting can deepen the wound and introduce infection; soften the area and seek advice if thick skin or a deep fissure persists.
