Causes of continuous spotting after menstruation

Because the bleeding continues beyond your expected period, arranging an assessment is sensible, particularly if this pattern is new, recurrent, associated with pain, or happening after menopause.

A period can taper into light brown or pink discharge as older blood leaves the uterus. Longer spotting may also follow a change in hormonal contraception or inconsistent doses. Chlamydia and other genital infections can inflame tissue and cause bleeding, sometimes after sex. Endometrial polyps and uterine fibroids can present with prolonged or irregular bleeding.

Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and womb cancer may present with bleeding between periods. This does not mean continuous spotting identifies cancer; the pattern needs examination because different causes can look alike. Pregnancy-related causes must also be considered whenever conception is possible.

Keep a daily note of spotting, period flow, clots, pelvic pain, bleeding after sex, discharge, and contraception use. Take a pregnancy test if relevant. At the appointment, share your last normal period, cervical screening history, medicines, and whether the bleeding began after a treatment change. Depending on the findings, assessment may include infection tests, a pelvic or cervical examination, blood tests, or ultrasound.

Go for urgent care if bleeding becomes heavy or accompanies fainting, severe dizziness, breathlessness, intense pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, or a positive pregnancy test. Prompt evaluation is also needed for fever with pelvic pain or abnormal discharge. Bleeding after menopause should be checked even when the amount is slight.

Ask whether the bleeding pattern points to the cervix, uterus, hormones, or an infection; which tests are appropriate; and when results will need follow-up. If you use contraception, ask whether to continue it unchanged while the cause is assessed.
