Causes of cloudy urine in males

Urine may look cloudy when it is concentrated, particularly after sweating, exercise, or not drinking enough. A urinary tract infection can add inflammatory cells, while a kidney infection may cause cloudy urine with fever, back or side pain, and feeling unwell. Mineral crystals, blood, mucus, or semen can also alter its appearance.

Cloudiness by itself does not identify the cause. Burning, urgency, frequent urination, discharge, an unusual smell, pain, or fever gives a clinician more useful context. The symptom may be temporary, but persistent or recurrent change deserves assessment.

Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and observe whether the appearance returns to normal. Note when the cloudiness occurs, whether it follows ejaculation, and any pain, discharge, fever, or change in urine frequency.

Arrange medical assessment if the change persists, returns repeatedly, or comes with urinary symptoms. A urine sample can help check for infection and other abnormalities; treatment depends on the finding, so avoid using leftover antibiotics.

Seek urgent care for cloudy urine with fever, chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, inability to pass urine, or visible blood. These features can occur with a kidney infection or another problem needing prompt treatment.

Ask whether you need a urine test, whether the pattern suggests dehydration or infection, whether sexual or prostate symptoms are relevant, and which changes should prompt urgent review.
