Causes of body aches

Flu-like infections such as Influenza, COVID-19, Malaria, Dengue Fever, or Brucellosis can cause aches alongside fever, tiredness, chills, headache, or digestive symptoms. Travel, insect exposure, unpasteurised animal products, and contact with someone ill can help guide the assessment. Fibromyalgia may cause widespread pain, poor sleep, and concentration difficulty without an obvious injury. Hypothyroidism can contribute to muscle discomfort with cold sensitivity, constipation, dry skin, or low energy. Aches can also follow strenuous activity, poor sleep, dehydration, or a minor viral illness.

Rest, drink fluids, and use gentle movement if it does not worsen the pain. Keep a record of fever, rash, joint swelling, weakness, recent travel, insect bites, new medicines, and possible exposure to infection. Follow the label for any pain medicine and check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, have liver or kidney disease, or take other medicines. Arrange a clinical review if aches are severe, persistent, recurrent, or unexplained.

Get urgent help for body aches with severe weakness, confusion, difficulty breathing, chest pain, a stiff neck, a rapidly spreading rash, fainting, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek prompt assessment after travel to a malaria area if fever or chills develop, and after a possible dengue exposure if fever, severe headache, bleeding, or marked abdominal pain occurs.
