Causes of blood vomiting during pregnancy

Frequent or forceful vomiting can create small tears or irritation in the throat or food pipe. Blood may look bright red, streaked through vomit, or dark and granular after contact with stomach acid. Pregnancy-related nausea can therefore be associated with bleeding after repeated retching, but the bleeding itself still needs assessment.

Other possibilities include Gastroenteritis or Food Poisoning, which can cause repeated vomiting and dehydration. Gallstones or Pancreatitis may cause upper abdominal pain and vomiting. Migraine can trigger severe nausea, while Meningitis is an uncommon but serious cause when vomiting occurs with severe headache, neck stiffness, light sensitivity, or confusion. The pregnancy stage, medicines, pain, fever, and hydration all help guide evaluation.

Contact your maternity team, doctor, or urgent service today, even if the amount seems small. Stop solid food temporarily if vomiting continues, take small sips of fluid if you can keep them down, and do not take anti-inflammatory painkillers or other medicine unless a clinician advises it. Note the colour and amount of blood, how often you vomited, abdominal pain, urine output, and any dizziness.

Call emergency services for heavy or repeated bleeding, black vomit, fainting, severe weakness, confusion, breathing difficulty, severe abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek urgent assessment for very little urine, a dry mouth with worsening dizziness, fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, or reduced fetal movement later in pregnancy. Do not travel alone if you feel faint.
