Cause of Syringoma

These bumps are commonly skin-coloured or slightly yellow-brown, smooth, and grouped around the lower eyelids. They may also occur on the cheeks, forehead, chest, or genital skin. Syringomas are usually harmless and are not caused by poor hygiene. Several bumps can develop gradually, and some people notice them more clearly with age or hormonal changes. Other skin bumps can look similar, so a dermatologist may diagnose them by examination and occasionally by a small skin sample.

No treatment is required when the bumps do not bother you. Avoid picking or using strong acids around the eyes, where irritation and scarring are concerns. If appearance is a concern, a dermatologist can discuss removal methods such as CO2 laser resurfacing or electrosurgery. These treatments target individual bumps but may cause temporary redness, pigment changes, crusting, or recurrence, so treatment choice depends on location, skin tone, and the number of lesions.

Arrange an assessment for a bump that bleeds, ulcerates, grows quickly, changes colour, becomes painful, or differs from the surrounding group. Seek earlier review for any eyelid lesion that affects vision or causes persistent irritation. A diagnosis is especially useful before attempting cosmetic treatment because not every small facial bump is a syringoma.
