What causes snoring?

Short answer

Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the nose, mouth, or throat partly narrow the airway and vibrate as you breathe during sleep.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Where it starts
The nose, mouth, or throat
Common pattern
Vibration caused by a partly narrowed airway during sleep
Warning sign
Breathing pauses, choking, gasping, or strong daytime sleepiness

The short answer

The narrowing can be related to sleeping on your back, nasal blockage, alcohol before bed, smoking, or natural features such as a crowded throat. It may come and go with a cold or allergy, or persist for a longer period.

What snoring can mean

A blocked nose makes it harder for air to pass smoothly, so the soft tissues may vibrate more. Allergic rhinitis can swell the lining of the nose, while chronic sinusitis may cause ongoing congestion and mouth breathing.

Extra tissue around the neck can reduce the space available for airflow. Obesity is one possible contributor, although people of any body size can snore. Loud, frequent snoring with pauses in breathing, choking or gasping, morning headaches, or marked daytime sleepiness can occur with obstructive sleep apnoea and deserves assessment.

What you can do

Try sleeping on your side, keeping a regular sleep routine, and treating nasal congestion with advice from a pharmacist or clinician. Avoid alcohol close to bedtime and review medicines that make you unusually sleepy with the prescriber; do not stop a prescribed medicine without guidance.

If weight is contributing, a supported weight-management plan may help reduce pressure around the upper airway. Keep a short record of when snoring occurs and ask someone who sleeps nearby whether they notice breathing pauses or gasping.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical review if snoring is persistent, worsening, disrupting sleep, or leaving you tired during the day. Seek prompt advice if another person reports repeated breathing pauses, choking, or gasping during sleep. Do not drive if sleepiness makes it difficult to stay alert.

A clinician may ask about your sleep, nose and throat symptoms, medicines, alcohol, and daytime alertness. They may recommend a sleep assessment or address nasal inflammation before deciding whether further testing is needed.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: Could nasal blockage or an allergy be contributing? Do my symptoms suggest obstructive sleep apnoea? Should I have a sleep assessment? Which changes are suitable with my medicines or health conditions? What should my household member record while I sleep?

Questions people ask

Does everyone who snores have obstructive sleep apnoea?

No. Snoring has several possible causes, but pauses in breathing, gasping, and significant daytime sleepiness should prompt a medical review for obstructive sleep apnoea.

Can a blocked nose cause snoring?

Yes. Congestion from a cold, allergic rhinitis, or chronic sinusitis can restrict nasal airflow and encourage mouth breathing, which may increase vibration in the throat.

What should I record before an appointment?

Note how often you snore, whether it changes with sleep position, and whether someone notices pauses, choking, or gasping. Record daytime sleepiness and any nasal symptoms as well.
