What causes olecranon bursitis?

Short answer
Olecranon bursitis occurs when the small fluid-filled sac over the elbow tip becomes irritated or inflamed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why olecranon bursitis happens
Repeated leaning on a hard surface, a direct knock, an inflammatory joint condition or infection can trigger it. Sometimes no clear cause is identified.
What changes at the elbow
The olecranon bursa normally helps skin glide over the point of the elbow. When irritated, it produces extra fluid and forms a soft or tense swelling at the back of the joint. Movement may remain fairly free because the swelling sits outside the joint, although bending can feel tight or sore.
Warmth, redness and tenderness raise concern for infection, particularly if there is a cut, graze or puncture nearby. Infection cannot be confirmed from appearance alone and needs clinical assessment.
Ways to protect the swollen bursa
Avoid resting the elbow on desks, armrests or floors, and use soft padding if contact is unavoidable. A wrapped cold pack can ease discomfort after irritation. Do not puncture, squeeze or attempt to drain the swelling yourself because this can introduce infection.
A clinician may consider medication, aspiration or another treatment according to the cause, symptom burden and examination. Aspiration is not automatically required for every swollen bursa.
When the elbow needs medical review
Seek prompt care if swelling is accompanied by spreading redness, increasing warmth, drainage, fever or feeling generally unwell. These features may accompany an infected bursa and should not be managed only with home care.
Assessment is also appropriate after a forceful impact, when elbow movement is markedly restricted, when pain is severe, or when swelling keeps returning. Urgent evaluation is warranted if the hand becomes numb, pale or cold after an injury.
Questions about the cause and treatment
Ask whether the swelling appears infected, whether an underlying joint condition is relevant, and whether fluid testing would alter treatment. Clarify how to pad the elbow, which activities to modify and what changes should trigger reassessment.

Questions people ask
Can leaning on my elbow cause olecranon bursitis?
Yes. Repeated pressure can irritate the bursa and lead to fluid accumulation over the elbow tip.
Does redness mean the bursa is infected?
Redness and warmth can occur with infection but are not diagnostic by themselves. Prompt clinical assessment is needed, especially with fever, drainage or worsening tenderness.
Can olecranon bursitis affect elbow movement?
The swollen bursa can make bending feel tight or uncomfortable, though the joint itself may still move reasonably well.
