What causes nasolabial folds?

Short answer
Nasolabial folds develop from facial structure, repeated movement, skin changes and shifts in the soft-tissue volume supporting the cheeks.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the lines become visible
These folds are natural facial contours where the cheek meets the area beside the nose and mouth. They may be visible early because of inherited anatomy, cheek shape or the way a person smiles. Over time, reduced skin elasticity, sun exposure and changes in facial fat and bone support can make the crease look deeper. Facial Volume Loss can change how light falls across the cheek, while repeated expression adds movement to an already flexible fold. Depth varies between people and does not by itself indicate a medical problem.
Options to discuss
Daily sun protection, moisturising and avoiding smoking can support overall skin quality, although they cannot erase an established fold. A qualified clinician can assess whether the main issue is skin texture, cheek support, volume loss or a combination. Options may include Dermal Fillers, Collagen Biostimulator Injection or a Thread Lift. Each has different effects, risks, timing and suitability; treatment should follow an in-person facial assessment rather than a photo alone.
When to seek care
Nasolabial folds generally need no medical attention. Arrange a clinical review if a new facial change is one-sided, associated with weakness, numbness, swelling or a skin lesion, or appears suddenly. Seek urgent help for sudden facial drooping, speech difficulty or limb weakness, as these are not typical cosmetic fold changes.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what is contributing most to your fold, whether treating cheek support or the line itself is appropriate, what results are realistic, and what warning signs require review after treatment.

Questions people ask
Are nasolabial folds abnormal?
No. They are common facial contours that may become more visible with expression and age-related tissue changes.
Can skincare remove the folds?
Skincare can support skin quality and sun protection, but deeper structural folds may need a procedure discussion.
