What causes easy skin bruising?

Bruising occurs when small vessels beneath the skin leak blood. A bump may be forgotten, especially on the arms, legs or hands. With age or cumulative ultraviolet exposure, skin and its supporting tissue may become more delicate, so a small impact leaves a visible mark. Sun-Damaged Skin is a related condition that can affect skin resilience.

Medicines that reduce clotting, some anti-inflammatory medicines and corticosteroids can also make bruises more noticeable. Supplements may contribute as well. Bruising that starts suddenly, spreads, or appears alongside other symptoms deserves assessment rather than self-treatment.

Protect a new bruise from further impact and place a cool, cloth-wrapped pack over it for short intervals during the first day. Rest the affected area if movement is uncomfortable. Use sunscreen and protective clothing on exposed skin, and keep walkways and work areas clear to reduce accidental knocks.

Make a list of medicines, vitamins and supplements, including recent changes. Photograph recurring bruises with the date and note their location, size and any remembered injury. Never change a prescribed treatment without discussing it with the prescriber.

Get urgent help if bruising is accompanied by uncontrolled bleeding, severe swelling or pain, faintness, breathing difficulty, weakness, confusion or a cold, numb limb. Book a medical review for repeated unexplained bruises, bruises in unusual locations, or associated nosebleeds, gum bleeding, fever, persistent fatigue or heavy menstrual bleeding.

Ask whether your medicine list could explain the bruising, whether sun-related skin fragility is present, and whether an examination or blood tests should check platelets, clotting or another medical cause.
