What should you know about caterpillar itching?

Contact can cause sudden itching, red bumps, patches, or hives on exposed skin. The reaction may be strongest where clothing brushed against the caterpillar or where the skin was rubbed afterward. Avoid touching the animal with bare hands; hairs can remain on fabric or surfaces. If itching continues without a clear exposure, other conditions such as Contact Dermatitis, Atopic Dermatitis, Hives, or Scabies may need consideration.

Move away from the source and avoid rubbing the area. Use sticky tape to lift visible hairs or spines, then wash the skin and change contaminated clothing. A cool compress may calm irritation. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine or soothing treatment is suitable, especially for children, pregnancy, or other medicines. Do not scratch, squeeze bumps, or apply harsh household chemicals.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, widespread hives, or vomiting after exposure. Arrange medical review if pain is intense, the eyes are affected, the rash is spreading, or symptoms remain troublesome after basic washing and removal of hairs.
