Short answer

Catarrhal laryngitis is inflammation of the voice box that can cause hoarseness, mucus, and throat irritation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main effect
Inflamed vocal cords can make the voice rough or weak.
Common irritants
Viral illness, voice overuse, smoke, dryness, and reflux.
Voice care
Use a comfortable voice and avoid whispering.

What is happening

The larynx contains the vocal cords. When its lining becomes inflamed, the cords may not vibrate smoothly, producing a rough, weak, or breathy voice. A cold, voice overuse, smoke, dry air, or reflux may irritate the area. You might also have a dry cough, a need to clear the throat, or a sore feeling when speaking.

[Hoarse Voice](/symptoms/hoarse-voice/) is a symptom rather than a single cause. Catarrhal laryngitis can occur with a [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/), and reflux can be another contributor. Hoarseness that persists needs assessment because other laryngeal problems can sound similar.

Supporting your voice

Rest your voice by speaking less and at a comfortable volume; whispering can strain the vocal cords, so avoid it. Drink fluids, avoid smoking and smoky rooms, and add moisture to dry air. Do not repeatedly force mucus from the throat. If reflux seems to trigger symptoms, discuss practical changes and treatment with a clinician.

A pharmacist or doctor can advise on symptom relief based on your health and medicines. Antibiotics are not automatically useful because many episodes follow viral illness or irritation. Singers, teachers, and others who rely heavily on their voice should seek tailored advice if symptoms interfere with work.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, noisy breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat swelling, or blue lips. Arrange a medical review for hoarseness that persists, keeps returning, is associated with a neck lump, coughing blood, unexplained weight loss, or significant pain when swallowing.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern fits laryngitis, reflux, or another cause; how long to rest your voice; whether you need an examination of the larynx; and when persistent hoarseness should be referred for specialist assessment.

Questions people ask

Should I whisper when I have laryngitis?

No. Whispering can strain the voice; speak briefly and gently or rest your voice instead.

When does hoarseness need checking?

Seek assessment when hoarseness persists, recurs, or comes with breathing, swallowing, bleeding, pain, or a neck lump.
