CAT scans, chest X-rays and lung cancer

A CAT scan, now usually called a CT scan, creates detailed cross-sectional images. It can clarify a shadow first noticed on an X-ray and show the lungs, lymph nodes and surrounding structures more clearly.

A chest X-ray is a flat image in which ribs, heart and lung tissue overlap. It may reveal a mass, collapsed area, fluid or infection, yet small or hidden abnormalities can be difficult to see. An abnormal X-ray can have several causes besides cancer.

CT separates the chest into detailed slices and helps clinicians assess a lesion's shape, location and connections to nearby tissue. Even when an appearance is concerning, inflammation, scarring and infection can resemble a tumour. Comparison with earlier images may show whether a finding is new or changing.

Review the result with the clinician who ordered the test. Depending on the finding, the next step may be comparison with prior scans, repeat imaging, a PET-CT scan, bronchoscopy or a needle biopsy. A biopsy allows a laboratory to identify the cell type.

If lung cancer is confirmed, further imaging and tumour testing help establish its extent and biological features. Those results, together with breathing fitness and general health, guide choices such as lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or other medicines. Genomic tumour profiling may help select treatment for some tumours.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion or coughing up more than small streaks of blood. These warning signs require immediate assessment regardless of the imaging result.

Arrange a prompt review for persistent coughing, repeated blood-streaked sputum, worsening breathlessness, chest pain, unexplained weight loss or a hoarse voice that does not settle. Lung cancer can present with these symptoms, although they also occur in other conditions.

Ask exactly where the abnormality is, how it compares with previous images and whether infection or scarring remains possible. Clarify which test comes next, whether contrast will be used, who will communicate the result and what symptoms should trigger earlier care.
