Possible eye melanoma symptoms in a cat

Not every pigmented spot is melanoma, and appearance alone cannot settle the diagnosis. Any new or evolving colour, shape or comfort change deserves a veterinary eye examination.

A cat with eye discomfort may squint, keep the eyelids closed, rub the face, avoid bright areas or become less active. Changes inside the eye can also affect the pupil or raise pressure, while reduced vision may show as hesitation on stairs, bumping into objects or being easily startled.

Inflammation, injury, glaucoma and benign pigment changes can resemble parts of this picture. A veterinarian may compare both eyes, measure eye pressure and examine internal structures; referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist may be appropriate when the finding is uncertain or changing.

Book a veterinary appointment and note when the change first appeared. Photographs taken in similar lighting can help show progression, but avoid flash if it causes distress. Prevent rubbing with guidance from the clinic and do not apply human eye drops or leftover pet medicine.

If a tumour is suspected, ask what tests are needed to assess the eye and the rest of the cat. Treatment decisions are veterinary and depend on the exact diagnosis, eye comfort, useful vision and whether disease is confined to the eye.

Seek same-day veterinary advice for persistent squinting, a suddenly cloudy eye, marked redness, discharge, an enlarged eye, unequal pupils or an obvious drop in vision. Emergency care is warranted after significant eye trauma, for bleeding from the eye, sudden severe swelling, collapse or intense distress. Rapid care protects comfort and may preserve vision when another treatable eye problem is responsible.

Ask whether the spot is within the iris or another structure, how it has changed, whether eye pressure and vision are affected, what would confirm the diagnosis, whether specialist examination is needed, and which signs mean the cat should return immediately.
