What should you know about cat blood eye discharge?

A small amount of blood may come from irritated tissue around the eye, a scratch, a foreign body, or forceful rubbing. Conjunctivitis can cause discharge and swollen, uncomfortable eyes, while allergy-related irritation may cause itching and watering. Blood mixed with discharge is not enough to identify the cause, and the eye itself needs examination.

Do not rub the eye or try to remove an embedded object. Wash your hands, gently wipe discharge from the eyelids with clean water and a fresh pad, and avoid sharing towels. Do not use leftover antibiotic, steroid, or redness-relief drops unless prescribed for this episode. Arrange a same-day assessment if blood is recurring, the discharge is thick, or the eye is painful.

Seek urgent eye care for reduced or blurred vision, marked pain, light sensitivity, a chemical splash, an injury, a protruding eye, or a visible object. Immediate care is also needed for severe swelling, heavy bleeding, fever with feeling very unwell, or symptoms after contact-lens use. Keep contact lenses out until a clinician says they are safe.

Ask whether the cornea is scratched, whether the discharge suggests infection, and which drops are suitable. Mention contact-lens use, recent injury, allergies, new products, and whether one or both eyes are affected.
