Castor Oil for Keratosis Pilaris: What to Know

Keratosis Pilaris develops when keratin collects around hair follicles, creating small rough bumps commonly on the upper arms, thighs, or cheeks. Castor oil can reduce surface dryness, but it is not an exfoliating treatment and does not remove the follicular plugs. Scrubbing hard or picking can increase redness and leave marks.

Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser after bathing and use lukewarm water. A clinician may suggest Emollient Therapy or a product containing an exfoliating ingredient; Topical Retinoids may suit some people but can irritate. Introduce one active product at a time and stop if burning or a rash develops. Avoid squeezing the bumps, and do not assume every bump is keratosis pilaris: Ingrown Hairs can look similar.

Arrange an examination if bumps are painful, pus-filled, rapidly changing, very itchy, or limited to an unusual area. Review is also sensible when home care has not helped or when the appearance affects your confidence; options may include a Chemical Peel or Laser Hair Removal in selected cases.
