What should you know about cases of polio?

Polio is caused by a virus that can spread through contact with infected faeces and contaminated food or water. Many infections cause no obvious symptoms, while others resemble a mild viral illness with fever, tiredness, headache, nausea or muscle discomfort. A small number can involve the nervous system and cause sudden weakness or paralysis. Weakness may affect one limb or more and can progress, so it should never be watched at home without medical advice.

Contact a healthcare service promptly if polio is suspected, if new weakness develops or if there has been exposure during travel or an outbreak. Avoid sharing towels, utensils or close-contact care until advice is given, wash hands after using the toilet and before food preparation, and follow public-health instructions. Check vaccination records for household members; Childhood Immunisation is the main prevention strategy.

Seek emergency help for sudden weakness, difficulty walking, swallowing or breathing, a new limp, severe neck or back stiffness, or reduced alertness. Do not drive someone with rapidly worsening weakness if emergency transport is available. Tell clinicians when symptoms began, which muscles are affected, recent travel, vaccination history and whether anyone nearby is ill.

Ask whether testing or public-health notification is needed, whether close contacts need assessment, and whether any vaccinations are due. Discuss rehabilitation support if weakness remains after the acute illness.
