What should you know about carpal tunnel pins and needles?

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passage at the wrist containing the median nerve. Pressure there can cause tingling, numbness, burning, or electric sensations in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger. Symptoms may be worse at night, while holding a phone, or during activities that keep the wrist bent. Hand weakness or dropping objects can develop when nerve pressure continues.

Symptoms outside this pattern may have another explanation. Peripheral neuropathy, type 2 diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency, hypothyroidism, anxiety, or panic disorder can cause altered sensation. Sudden symptoms affecting one side of the body require urgent assessment for stroke or a transient ischaemic attack.

Arrange a routine appointment if tingling keeps returning, wakes you, or affects grip. A clinician can examine sensation and strength and may suggest a wrist splint that keeps the wrist straight at night. Take breaks from repetitive gripping, adjust keyboard or tool position, and avoid leaning your wrist on a hard edge.

Do not ignore increasing weakness or treat persistent numbness only with pain medicine. The right treatment depends on the cause and may include hand therapy, an injection, or a procedure after assessment.

Call emergency services for sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, new trouble speaking, severe imbalance, or sudden vision change. Seek prompt review for rapidly worsening hand weakness, severe swelling, or symptoms after a significant injury.
