Canon is the equipment manufacturer; the clinical purpose depends on the body area and the question your care team needs to answer. Image quality also depends on the selected scan protocol, your ability to remain still and specialist interpretation.

During MRI, you lie on a table that moves into the scanner. The machine produces loud tapping or knocking sounds while it collects images, so the radiology team provides hearing protection. Staff can see and communicate with you during the examination, and you may receive a call device.

Some examinations use an injected contrast agent to make particular tissues or blood vessels easier to assess. Contrast is not required for every MRI. The radiologist chooses sequences and contrast use according to the clinical question, such as examining a breast finding or defining the extent of a tumour.

Complete the MRI safety questionnaire carefully. Tell the imaging team about pacemakers, implanted stimulators, pumps, surgical clips, metal fragments, hearing implants, previous operations, pregnancy, kidney problems, allergies and any prior reaction to contrast. Bring implant details if available because compatibility must be checked for the exact device.

Follow the centre's instructions about food, drink and regular medicines, since preparation varies by examination and sedation plan. Remove jewellery and other metal items when directed. If enclosed spaces cause anxiety or pain makes lying still difficult, contact the centre beforehand so the team can discuss positioning, support or prescribed sedation.

Tell the radiographer immediately if you feel burning, unexpected heating, sharp pain, breathing difficulty, swelling, dizziness or distress during the scan. The team can stop the examination and assess you. Do not wait silently because a symptom may be related to positioning, an item near the magnetic field, anxiety or contrast.

After contrast, obtain urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, fainting or a rapidly spreading rash. Contact the imaging centre for persistent pain, redness or swelling around the injection site. If sedation was used, follow the discharge instructions and have the arranged adult support.

You can ask which body area will be scanned, whether contrast or sedation is planned, and how an implant will be checked for MRI compatibility. Also confirm who will interpret the images, when the report will reach the referring clinician, and whether earlier scans should be brought for comparison.
