What should you know about cannula for lip filler?

A cannula is inserted through an entry point beside or near the treatment area and guided beneath the skin. Its rounded tip is designed to pass through tissue rather than cut through it, while the injector controls the amount and location of filler. This can reduce the number of skin punctures compared with using a needle at every injection point, but it does not remove the possibility of swelling, bruising, infection, unevenness, or a blood-vessel complication. The lips contain delicate structures, so the injector must understand facial anatomy and know how to respond if a complication develops.

The choice between a cannula and a needle depends on the product, the area being shaped, the injector’s technique, and your anatomy. A cannula may help distribute product smoothly across a broader part of the lip, whereas a fine needle can offer detailed placement at the border or other small areas. A cannula is not automatically more suitable for every person.

Before treatment, share your medical history, allergies, previous filler, cold-sore history, medicines, and any tendency to bruise. Ask which filler will be used, why a cannula is being considered, where the entry point will be, and what follow-up is available. Do not proceed until you understand the expected changes and the warning signs that need urgent contact.

Afterward, follow the injector’s instructions. Mild tenderness, swelling, or bruising can occur. Avoid pressing or massaging the lips unless specifically instructed, and postpone strenuous activity, strong heat exposure, and alcohol if your clinician advises this. Keep the area clean and attend the planned review so persistent lumps or asymmetry can be assessed.

Contact the injector promptly for worsening pain, increasing swelling, spreading redness, warmth, discharge, fever, or skin that becomes unusually pale, dusky, or mottled. Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden vision changes, severe headache, weakness, confusion, or other new neurological symptoms after injection. Do not wait for a routine review if symptoms are rapidly progressing; the treating service needs to assess circulation and infection concerns quickly.
