What should you know about canine perioral dermatitis treatment?

Perioral dermatitis causes clusters of small red or skin-coloured bumps around the mouth, often with burning, dryness, or sensitivity. It can extend around the nose or eyes. It may look like pimples, but squeezing the bumps can increase irritation and does not address the underlying inflammation.

Topical corticosteroids can trigger or worsen this condition in some people, and stopping them suddenly after regular use may cause a flare. A clinician can advise on a safe plan rather than having you change prescribed treatment alone.

Use a mild cleanser, lukewarm water, and a plain moisturiser if needed. Pause fragranced products, scrubs, heavy cosmetics, and new actives until the skin settles. Avoid picking, and tell your clinician about steroid creams, inhalers, or nasal sprays.

Depending on the findings, treatment may include topical antibiotic therapy or an oral antibiotic course. Take medicines exactly as directed and expect improvement to be assessed over time; changing products repeatedly can make it harder to identify what helps.
