What should you know about cancerous skin tags?

Skin tags are soft, flesh-coloured growths that often hang from a narrow stalk, commonly around the neck, eyelids, underarms, or skin folds. A lesion that is firm, irregular, heavily pigmented, ulcerated, rapidly enlarging, painful, or repeatedly bleeding may be something other than a skin tag, including another benign growth or skin cancer. Appearance alone cannot settle the diagnosis.

A dermatologist can inspect the lesion closely and decide whether a sample is needed. Tell them about recent change, friction from clothing or jewellery, bleeding after catching it, and any history of unusual skin growths.

Do not tie off, cut, freeze, or apply acids to an uncertain growth at home. These actions can cause bleeding, infection, scarring, and loss of tissue that a clinician may need to examine. Keep the area clean, reduce rubbing, and photograph it if you need to document change.

After assessment, a confirmed benign tag may be removed for irritation or appearance. Options can include Skin Tag Removal, Cryotherapy (Lesion Removal), or Electrosurgery. The choice depends on its size, stalk, location, pigmentation, and whether tissue should be sent for analysis.

Arrange a prompt review for a growth that changes quickly, develops a dark or uneven area, forms a sore, bleeds without clear friction, or becomes persistently painful. Seek urgent help for bleeding that continues despite firm pressure, or for spreading redness, pus, fever, or worsening swelling after an injury or procedure. A stable, familiar tag can be discussed at a routine visit if it catches or irritates.
