Cancer in the bones from prostate cancer

Cancer in the bones from prostate cancer is metastatic prostate cancer, not a new primary bone cancer. The cancer cells began in the prostate and travelled to bone, where they may cause pain, weaken bone or press on nearby nerves. Treatment is selected according to the cancer's extent, symptoms, previous care and the person's general health.

Bone metastases can occur in areas such as the spine, pelvis or ribs. Some people have no symptoms when a scan first finds them; others develop persistent, localised pain that may be worse with movement or at night. A weakened bone can sometimes fracture, and disease in the spine can compress the spinal cord. Doctors may use imaging, blood tests and the pattern of earlier prostate cancer findings to assess the affected areas.

Tell your oncology team about new or changing bone pain, difficulty walking or reduced ability to manage everyday activities. The team may review scans and treatment history before recommending cancer-control treatment, pain relief, radiotherapy to a painful or vulnerable site, medicine that helps protect bones, or a combination. Treatment that lowers or blocks male hormones is often central to controlling metastatic prostate cancer. Supportive and palliative care can be given alongside cancer treatment to improve comfort and function.

Seek emergency medical care for new leg weakness, numbness around the buttocks or genitals, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe back pain with difficulty walking. These can signal pressure on the spinal cord and require rapid assessment. Sudden severe pain after a minor movement, inability to put weight on a limb, or a visibly abnormal limb may indicate a fracture and also needs urgent assessment.

Ask which bones are affected, whether any area is at risk of fracture or nerve compression, and what changes should trigger an emergency visit. It can also help to discuss the goal of each proposed treatment, how pain and mobility will be supported, possible side effects, whether dental assessment is needed before bone-strengthening medicine, and when response will be reassessed.
