Cancer and sore throat: what should you know?

Short answer
Cancer can sometimes cause a persistent sore throat, but infections, reflux, allergies, and irritation are more common explanations.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it may mean
A sore throat is a common presentation of many short-lived illnesses, including the common cold, influenza, COVID-19, tonsillitis, and strep throat. Acid reflux can irritate the throat, while allergic rhinitis may cause drainage and soreness. Cancer affecting the mouth, throat, voice box, or nearby tissues may produce a sore throat that does not settle, especially when it occurs with hoarseness, trouble swallowing, a neck lump, unexplained weight loss, persistent ear pain, or a change in the voice. These features do not diagnose cancer, but they make an examination more useful.
What to do next
For a mild sore throat, drink fluids, rest your voice, avoid smoke, and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Follow label directions for any over-the-counter pain relief and ask a pharmacist if you have another illness or take regular medicines. Arrange a primary-care appointment if the soreness persists, keeps returning, or is accompanied by hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, or a neck swelling. A clinician may inspect your mouth and throat, feel the neck, and decide whether further assessment is needed.
When to seek care urgently
Seek urgent care if you cannot swallow saliva, have difficulty breathing, develop rapidly increasing throat or neck swelling, become confused, or cannot keep fluids down. Prompt review is also sensible for coughing or vomiting blood, severe dehydration, or a sore throat with marked weakness. Do not wait for a symptom to become severe if you have been advised to attend follow-up for a suspected throat or head-and-neck problem.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what examination is needed, whether your symptoms fit an infection, reflux, or allergy, and how long to monitor them. Mention smoking or vaping, alcohol use, voice changes, swallowing symptoms, neck lumps, recent infections, and any medicines that could irritate the throat.
