Can Vicks inhaler cause loss of smell?

Menthol vapour can create a strong cool or open feeling in the nose. That sensation does not necessarily mean that the nasal passages are clearer or that the smell nerves are working differently. If you cannot detect familiar odours, the inhaler may simply coincide with another cause rather than be the cause itself.

Notice whether smell changed before use, whether one or both nostrils are affected, and whether you have congestion, facial pressure, discharge, fever, or recent respiratory illness. Arrange a review if smell does not return as congestion settles or if the change began without a clear explanation.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, severe wheezing, or a serious allergic reaction. Seek prompt assessment for one-sided persistent blockage, recurrent nosebleeds, severe facial pain, high fever, or a sudden unexplained loss of smell.
