Can spondylolisthesis cause sciatica?

This nerve irritation may produce pain that travels from the lower back or buttock into the leg. Some people also notice tingling, numbness, or weakness along the affected nerve's path.

Spondylolisthesis means one vertebra has moved forward relative to the one beneath it. The shift itself, changes in the nearby joints, or thickened supporting tissues can reduce the room available for a lumbar nerve root. Sciatica is the pattern of symptoms that follows when a nerve contributing to the sciatic nerve becomes irritated or compressed.

Symptoms can vary with posture and activity. Standing, walking, bending, or extending the back may aggravate them, while a different position may ease them. An examination helps distinguish nerve-related leg symptoms from hip, muscle, or circulation problems.

Arrange a clinical assessment if radiating leg pain persists, keeps returning, or limits walking and daily tasks. A clinician may check strength, sensation, reflexes, walking pattern, and movements that reproduce symptoms. Imaging may be considered when the examination suggests significant nerve compression, symptoms are worsening, or treatment planning requires it.

Until assessed, avoid movements that clearly intensify pain down the leg, but do not assume prolonged bed rest is necessary. Treatment may include activity adjustment, suitable pain relief, and physiotherapy focused on comfortable movement, trunk control, and gradual return to function.

Seek urgent medical care for new difficulty controlling the bladder or bowel, numbness around the genitals or inner thighs, rapidly worsening leg weakness, or symptoms affecting both legs. These can signal severe pressure on the nerves at the base of the spine.

Prompt assessment is also sensible after a significant injury, or when severe pain is accompanied by fever or feeling systemically unwell.

Ask which nerve appears affected, whether your examination shows weakness, which activities are reasonable now, and what changes should trigger reassessment. You can also ask how progress will be measured and whether imaging would alter the treatment plan.
