Can sinusitis cause loss of smell?

Inflamed tissue narrows the passages between the nose and sinuses. Mucus and congestion then make it harder for odour molecules to reach the upper part of the nose, so smells may seem faint or absent. Food flavour can change as a result.

A cold or allergic rhinitis can produce a similar blockage. COVID-19 and Long COVID can also affect smell, sometimes without marked congestion, so the pattern and timing matter. Repeated or long-lasting symptoms may point to chronic sinusitis or another nasal problem.

Rest, drink fluids, avoid tobacco smoke, and reduce exposure to dusty or strongly fragranced air. A saline rinse can help clear mucus for some people; use sterile or boiled and cooled water, and wash the device after use.

Do not place household substances inside the nose. Use sprays or other medicines only as directed, since some products are unsuitable for prolonged use or for people with particular health conditions.

Arrange a clinical review if smell loss persists after congestion improves, keeps recurring, follows a head injury, or occurs with a one-sided blocked nose or bleeding. Seek urgent help for swelling around the eye, vision changes, severe headache, confusion, or breathing difficulty.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest sinusitis, allergy, a viral illness, or another cause. Discuss whether testing, nasal treatment, or an ear-nose-and-throat referral is appropriate, and how to protect yourself from hazards you may not smell.
