Can influenza cause pneumonia?

Influenza affects the airways and lungs. In some people, inflammation extends into the small air sacs, causing viral pneumonia. Damage to airway defences can also make it easier for another infection to develop, producing pneumonia after the initial flu symptoms.

Pneumonia may cause cough, fever, chills, chest discomfort, fast breathing, breathlessness or unusual weakness. Symptoms can worsen after seeming to improve, so a new decline during recovery deserves attention.

Rest, drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration, and use medicines only as directed. Monitor breathing and alertness rather than relying on fever alone. A clinician may listen to the chest and decide whether oxygen checks, imaging or treatment for a bacterial infection is needed. Do not start antibiotics without medical advice.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, collapse, or inability to stay awake. Arrange urgent medical assessment for worsening breathlessness, persistent high fever, coughing blood, dehydration, or symptoms that return or intensify after initial improvement. Children, older adults, pregnant people and those with long-term conditions may need earlier advice.
