Can hyperhidrosis cause intertrigo?

Intertrigo is inflammation where two skin surfaces rub together, such as beneath the breasts, in the groin, armpits, or abdominal folds. Sweat keeps these areas damp while movement creates rubbing. Redness, soreness, burning, cracking, or odour may follow. Yeast or bacteria can complicate an already irritated fold. Intertrigo can occur without hyperhidrosis, so the rash itself does not prove that excessive sweating is the cause.

Wash gently, rinse away cleanser, and dry each fold carefully by patting. Change sweaty clothing and choose loose breathable layers. A clean absorbent cloth can separate a fold, but change it when damp. Avoid fragranced powders or harsh antiseptics unless recommended. Recurrent intertrigo is a reason to discuss sweat control and possible yeast or bacterial involvement with a healthcare professional.

Book an assessment if the area cracks, bleeds, oozes, smells foul, becomes very tender, or fails to improve with gentle cleansing and drying. Fever, spreading redness, or increasing warmth needs prompt advice. Examination helps distinguish inflammation, yeast, bacteria, and other causes.

Ask which fold-care routine fits you, whether infection is present, and how to manage sweating without irritating the skin. Tell the clinician about allergies, previous creams, and recurrence in a particular fold.
