Can hyperhidrosis cause erythrasma?

Erythrasma is a superficial bacterial infection that commonly affects the groin, underarms, between the toes, or other folds. It may appear as a slowly expanding pink, red-brown, or brown patch with fine scaling, and itch may be mild or absent. Excess moisture, friction, tight clothing, and skin-fold occlusion can support the problem. Hyperhidrosis is a contributing condition rather than the only possible cause, so a similar-looking rash may instead be fungal dermatitis, eczema, or irritation.

Arrange an examination if a fold rash persists, spreads, or returns. Keep folds gently clean and thoroughly dry, change sweaty clothing, and choose breathable fabrics where practical. Do not rely on steroid cream alone for an undiagnosed rash, because it can alter the appearance of an infection. A clinician may use a skin examination or bedside test and can select treatment for the infection while also addressing excess sweating.

Seek prompt medical review for pain, warmth, cracks, drainage, marked swelling, or a rash spreading beyond the fold. Get urgent help for fever, rapidly worsening redness, or feeling faint or seriously unwell. Repeated episodes, diabetes, immune suppression, or skin damage from friction should be mentioned because they can change the care plan.
