Can hyperhidrosis cause bromhidrosis?

Sweat itself is usually not strongly odorous. Odour can develop when bacteria on moist skin interact with sweat, skin oils, and shed cells. This is more likely in the underarms, feet, groin, or skin folds, where heat and friction can keep the area damp. Bromhidrosis can also occur without hyperhidrosis, and a sudden change in smell may reflect infection, medication, diet, or another medical issue. Odour is not a sign that someone is unclean.

Wash affected areas gently, dry carefully between folds and toes, and change damp clothing and socks promptly. Breathable clothing and shoes that can dry between uses may help. An antiperspirant, rather than a deodorant alone, can reduce sweat when used as directed on intact skin. Persistent odour, skin breakdown, or heavy sweating that disrupts work or sleep deserves a dermatology assessment; treatment can address both moisture and bacterial overgrowth.

Arrange prompt review for foul odour with redness, pain, warmth, cracks, pus, or a spreading rash. Seek urgent care for fever, rapidly worsening swelling, or severe tenderness. A new generalised change in sweating, night sweats, dizziness, or fainting should also be discussed with a clinician rather than treated only with deodorant.

Ask whether hyperhidrosis is driving the odour, whether a bacterial or fungal problem is present, and which antiperspirant strength or treatment suits the affected area. Ask how to protect irritated skin and when persistent sweating warrants evaluation for an underlying cause.
