Can house dust mite allergy cause asthma?

House dust mite allergy can trigger asthma symptoms and contribute to asthma in susceptible people. The allergy does not mean that every exposed person will develop asthma, but repeated exposure can keep the airways inflamed and reactive.

Dust mites are tiny organisms found in household dust, especially in bedding, mattresses, carpets and upholstered furniture. Their waste particles can be inhaled and provoke an allergic response. In someone with asthma, this response may cause wheezing, chest tightness, coughing or breathlessness. Symptoms can be worse during sleep, on waking, or while cleaning. Allergy and asthma can also occur separately, so assessment is needed to identify the pattern.

Arrange a medical assessment if symptoms recur around bedrooms, dust or cleaning. Keep bedding clean according to its care instructions, reduce dust-collecting clutter, ventilate rooms and use damp cleaning methods. A clinician may assess breathing, allergies and other triggers, then discuss an inhaler or allergy treatment if appropriate. Do not stop a prescribed controller inhaler because symptoms improve.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking, blue or grey lips, confusion, faintness, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening. Use your prescribed reliever plan if you have one. Arrange prompt review when nighttime coughing, wheezing with activity, or repeated reliance on a reliever is affecting daily life.
