Can getting your tubes tied stop your period?

Tubal sterilisation blocks or cuts the fallopian tubes so sperm cannot reach an egg. The ovaries, womb and hormone cycle continue to function, so the womb lining can still build up and shed as a period.

A change noticed after sterilisation may have another explanation. Stopping the contraceptive pill, injection or hormonal coil around the time of surgery can reveal the bleeding pattern that those methods had previously altered. Stress, pregnancy, perimenopause, thyroid problems and other gynaecological conditions can also affect timing or flow.

Light vaginal bleeding shortly after the operation may come from the procedure rather than being a menstrual period. Your surgical team should explain what recovery-related bleeding to expect.

Track when bleeding starts, how heavy it is, pain, and any medicines or contraception recently stopped. If a period is late and pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test even after sterilisation, then contact a clinician if it is positive or uncertainty remains.

Book a routine appointment if periods remain absent, become repeatedly irregular, or the change is troubling. A clinician can consider pregnancy, hormone-related causes, medicines and conditions affecting the womb or ovaries. If reducing or stopping menstrual bleeding is your goal, ask about options specifically designed to change bleeding, such as a hormonal coil.

Get urgent medical assessment for a positive pregnancy test or missed period with one-sided lower abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, fainting or unusual vaginal bleeding. Pregnancy after tubal sterilisation needs prompt evaluation to check where it is developing.

After surgery, seek prompt advice for worsening abdominal pain, fever, spreading redness or discharge from a wound, persistent vomiting, or bleeding that is much heavier than your usual period. Sudden severe pain, collapse or difficulty breathing warrants emergency care.

You could ask whether your bleeding change fits surgical recovery, whether a pregnancy test or examination is needed, and whether stopping hormonal contraception could explain it. Also discuss which menstrual-suppression option suits your health history if fewer or lighter periods are a priority.
