Can dehydration cause kidney stones?

Short answer

Yes, dehydration can contribute to kidney stones by making urine concentrated enough for stone-forming substances to crystallise.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Mechanism
Less water can make urine more concentrated
Possible symptoms
Side or back pain, groin pain, nausea, or blood in urine
Urgent combination
Fever or chills with urinary pain needs prompt care

How low fluid levels may contribute

Urine normally carries dissolved minerals and other substances out of the body. When you lose fluid or drink too little, there is less water to dilute them. Crystals can then form and join into a stone. Dehydration is a risk factor, not the only explanation; family tendency, diet, some medicines, and certain health conditions may also play a part. A stone may cause sharp pain in the side or back, pain that travels towards the groin, nausea, or blood in the urine, although symptoms vary.

Reducing the risk

Drink regularly across the day and increase fluids during heat, exercise, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Water is a suitable default for many people. If you have had a stone, ask about testing the stone or urine because prevention depends on its type and your health. Do not force fluids if a clinician has prescribed a restriction for heart or kidney disease. If stone-like pain begins, seek advice about pain relief and assessment rather than assuming it is only dehydration.

When to seek medical care

Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe or persistent side pain, blood in the urine, or pain with nausea. Seek urgent help for fever or chills with urinary pain, repeated vomiting, inability to pass urine, faintness, or pain that is suddenly severe. A blocked urinary tract with infection can become serious and needs timely treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms need imaging or urine tests, what stone type is suspected, and how much fluid is suitable for you. Mention previous stones, family history, bowel illness, and any medicines or supplements.

Questions people ask

Does drinking more water dissolve every kidney stone?

No. Fluids can help prevent concentrated urine and may support passage of some stones, but treatment depends on the stone and its location.

Can kidney stones occur even if I drink fluids?

Yes. Stone risk can also involve family tendency, diet, medicines, and health conditions. Repeated stones deserve a prevention review.
