Can cervical spondylosis cause cervical radiculopathy?

Disc height loss, bulging tissue and bony overgrowth can reduce the opening where a cervical nerve exits. Contact, pressure or inflammation at that nerve root may then produce radiculopathy.

Cervical spondylosis describes wear-related changes involving the neck discs, joints and nearby bone. Cervical radiculopathy describes the nerve problem that can result, rather than the underlying wear itself.

A compressed or inflamed cervical nerve root can cause pain that travels from the neck into a shoulder, arm or hand. Tingling, numbness or weakness may follow a particular nerve distribution. Neck changes can also appear on a scan without causing symptoms, so imaging must be matched with the examination.

Arrange a clinical assessment if arm symptoms persist, interfere with sleep or work, or include weakness. The clinician may check neck movement, reflexes, sensation and strength to identify which nerve may be affected.

Treatment often begins with activity adjustment, guided exercise and pain relief chosen for your health history. Avoid forceful neck manipulation or exercises that clearly increase radiating pain. A physiotherapist can help restore comfortable movement and build neck and shoulder support without repeatedly provoking the nerve.

Seek prompt medical care for new or worsening arm or hand weakness, increasing clumsiness, difficulty walking, poor balance, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These features may indicate significant nerve or spinal cord involvement.

Urgent assessment is also appropriate after a substantial neck injury, or when neck pain occurs with fever, severe illness or unexplained weight loss. Sudden weakness or symptoms affecting the face or speech require emergency evaluation.
