Can BRCA Gene Mutation Cause Prostate Cancer?

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are involved in repairing DNA damage. A harmful mutation can leave cells less able to correct certain changes, which may raise the chance of some cancers, including prostate cancer. The effect depends on the gene, the specific variant and the person’s family history.

A BRCA finding may be inherited or may be detected only in prostate tumour tissue. An inherited finding can affect conversations about relatives and future cancer checks. A tumour-only finding may help the oncology team understand the cancer and consider treatment options. Neither type, by itself, proves that cancer is present throughout the body.

Ask a genetic counsellor or a clinician familiar with inherited cancer risk to review the laboratory report. The wording matters: a clearly harmful variant is handled differently from a variant whose significance is uncertain. Share relevant family history, including prostate, breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancers.

If prostate cancer has been diagnosed, provide the result to the urology and oncology teams. They can combine it with symptoms, examination, PSA results, scans and tumour features when planning care. Avoid changing medicines or starting supplements because of a genetic result without clinical advice.

A BRCA mutation is not usually an urgent problem by itself, but it deserves a planned review. Contact a clinician promptly for blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, new severe back or hip pain, or weakness or numbness in the legs. These signs can have other explanations, yet they should be assessed without delay.

Ask whether your result is inherited or tumour-only, which gene and variant were identified, and what the classification means. Ask how your family history changes follow-up, whether relatives may benefit from counselling, and which prostate checks are suitable for you. If cancer is diagnosed, ask whether the result affects treatment choices.
