Calcified cyst on the scalp: what should you know?

Pilar cysts, also called trichilemmal cysts, develop from a hair follicle and are common on the scalp. They may feel smooth, rounded, and firm beneath the skin. A cyst can become harder when its contents thicken or when mineral material accumulates, but touch alone cannot identify the cause.

A scalp lump may also be another type of cyst, an inflamed lesion, or a different growth. Compare its size, tenderness, mobility, and surface changes over time; a new or changing lump belongs in the category of [Skin Lumps](/symptoms/skin-lumps/) that may need assessment.

Do not squeeze, puncture, or repeatedly press the lump. These actions can injure the skin and may introduce infection. Arrange a routine dermatology visit if it is persistent, catches on a comb, causes discomfort, or makes washing or sleeping difficult.
