Burping and belching causes

Short answer
Burping and belching can come from swallowed air, reflux, digestive irritation, or changes in bowel function.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible explanations
Air is swallowed during fast eating, chewing gum, drinking through a straw, or speaking while eating. Acid reflux can cause repeated belching with burning or a sour taste. Gastritis may cause upper abdominal discomfort, nausea or early fullness. Helicobacter pylori infection and hiatus hernia are other conditions a clinician may consider. Irritable bowel syndrome can occur alongside bloating and altered bowel habits, although burping does not by itself identify any one condition.
What you can try
Slow down meals, chew thoroughly and limit fizzy drinks, gum and habits that make you swallow air. Notice whether symptoms follow particular foods, stress, constipation or lying down. Avoid taking leftover antibiotics or changing prescribed medicine without advice. A clinician or pharmacist can discuss acid reflux medication when burning or regurgitation is part of the pattern.
When to seek care
Book an assessment when burping is persistent, newly troublesome, or associated with ongoing pain, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, poor appetite or weight change. Get urgent help for severe chest discomfort, breathing difficulty, faintness, vomiting blood, or black stools.
Questions for your doctor
What features suggest swallowed air rather than reflux or stomach irritation? Do I need testing for an underlying infection? Could my medicines, bowel pattern or meal habits be contributing?

Questions people ask
Is frequent burping always reflux?
No. Swallowed air is common, and stomach irritation or bowel symptoms may also be relevant.
Should I self-treat persistent burping?
Short-term practical changes may help, but persistent or changing symptoms deserve a clinical assessment.
