What should you know about burn scar removal with laser?

Different laser approaches target different features. Fractional laser treatment creates controlled microscopic treatment zones that can encourage remodelling in selected scars, while other devices may focus on colour or visible blood vessels. Suitability depends on scar maturity, thickness, location, skin tone, active inflammation and the amount of movement around it. Several appointments may be discussed, with gradual change rather than an instant result.

At consultation, disclose recent tanning, cold sores, medicines, allergies and any history of raised scars. Follow the clinic’s instructions about cleansing, moisturising and sun protection. After treatment, temporary redness, swelling, sensitivity or surface changes can occur; do not pick or abrade the area while it recovers. Scar revision surgery may be more suitable for a sharply contracted scar, and a skin graft may be considered when tissue is missing.

Contact the treating team promptly if pain, swelling, heat or redness is worsening rather than settling, or if you see pus-like drainage, fever, blistering that concerns you or an opening in the skin.
