What should you know about a burn scar on your stomach?

Burn healing can leave skin flatter or raised, lighter or darker, and more sensitive than nearby skin. A tight scar across the abdomen may pull when you stretch, sit up or twist. Raised, firm or itchy tissue can continue to mature gradually, while a stable flat mark may mainly be a colour or texture concern.

Once the wound has fully closed, use the aftercare recommended by your clinician and protect the area from sunlight, which can deepen colour differences. Avoid picking, harsh scrubs and unapproved bleaching products. A dermatologist can examine the scar and discuss silicone-based care, injections, fractional laser treatment or scar revision surgery; extensive injury may require a skin graft. Treatment choice depends on thickness, movement, skin tone and whether the scar is still changing.

Arrange medical review if the scar is becoming more raised, painful, itchy or tight, or if movement of your abdomen is restricted. Seek prompt care for new warmth, spreading redness, swelling, drainage, fever, bleeding or a wound that is opening. A changing scar deserves assessment even when the original burn happened long ago.
