Burn Scar Home Remedy: Safer Care at Home

Short answer
Home care can support a closed burn scar with gentle moisturising and sun protection, but household remedies cannot safely replace assessment of a deep or changing injury.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- For closed skin
- Gentle washing and bland moisturiser.
- Avoid
- Lemon, toothpaste, butter, harsh scrubs, and irritant oils.
- Get help
- Seek care for infection signs or a deep burn.
What home care can and cannot do
A healed burn scar may be darker, lighter, thicker, flatter, itchy, or tight than surrounding skin. Home care can reduce dryness and friction and help protect new skin while it settles. It cannot reliably remove established scar tissue or determine whether an unhealed area is infected.
Never treat an open, blistered, wet, or draining burn with cosmetic products. Lemon juice, undiluted essential oils, toothpaste, butter, abrasive scrubs, and unprescribed steroid or bleaching creams can irritate damaged skin and worsen colour change.
Safer routine
Once the surface has closed, wash gently, pat dry, and apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser. Choose soft clothing or a non-irritating covering where rubbing is a problem. Protect the scar from sunlight with clothing and sunscreen appropriate for your skin. Stop any product that causes burning, rash, or new swelling.
If the scar is raised, painful, tight, or distressing despite simple care, a dermatology clinician can assess it. Options may include Fractional Laser Treatment, Scar Revision Surgery, or Skin Graft, depending on the tissue change and location.
When home care is not enough
Arrange prompt care for worsening pain, warmth, swelling, pus, bad smell, fever, wound reopening, or redness spreading beyond the injury. Seek urgent help for a deep or extensive burn, a burn affecting the face, hands, feet, genitals, or a major joint, or any breathing difficulty.
Questions for a clinician
Ask when moisturiser, massage, silicone, or sunscreen is suitable for your particular scar. Ask whether the mark is fully healed, how to manage itch or tightness, and which treatment would respect your natural skin colour.

Questions people ask
Does aloe vera remove a burn scar?
It may feel soothing for some people on closed skin, but it does not remove established scar tissue and can irritate sensitive skin.
Can I scrub away dark scar skin?
No. Scrubbing can create more inflammation and deepen uneven pigment, particularly in recently healed skin.
