What causes Burkitt lymphoma?

A characteristic change involves the MYC gene, which helps regulate cell growth. Usually, no single everyday exposure or action explains why these changes occurred in an individual.

Epstein-Barr virus is associated with some forms of Burkitt lymphoma, but the relationship varies among people and regions. Infection with this widespread virus does not by itself mean lymphoma will develop. Reduced immune function, including immune suppression related to certain illnesses or medicines, can also be relevant.

The genetic change is found in the lymphoma cells; that does not automatically make Burkitt lymphoma an inherited condition. A clinician can review personal and family history if there is concern about an unusual pattern of cancers.

Arrange a medical assessment for a lump or swelling that enlarges quickly, persistent abdominal swelling or pain, ongoing fever, drenching night sweats, or unexplained weight loss. Record when the change started and whether it affects eating, breathing, bowel habits, or daily activity.

Doctors do not diagnose Burkitt lymphoma from a risk factor or virus test alone. Evaluation may include examination, blood tests, imaging, and a biopsy. If lymphoma is confirmed, further tests show its distribution and help the specialist select treatment.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, a seizure, fainting, or new weakness. These warning signs warrant rapid assessment because swelling or illness may be affecting essential body functions, regardless of its cause.

You may want to ask which cell changes were found, whether Epstein-Barr virus testing is relevant, and whether any medicine or health condition affects immune function. Ask what the biopsy establishes, which additional tests are needed, and whether relatives need any assessment; for most people, routine testing of family members is not part of lymphoma care.
