Bumpy Skin After Sunburn: What to Do

Sunburn causes inflammation in exposed skin. As the injury settles, the surface may feel rough, peel, or form fluid-filled blisters. Itchy clustered bumps can also occur after light exposure, particularly when covered skin is less affected. Sun-Damaged Skin describes longer-term effects of repeated exposure rather than a single episode.

Do not pop blisters. Note the exposed area, the time since sun exposure, whether the skin is hot or very painful, and whether redness is expanding. Blistering, peeling, and redness can be useful terms when describing the change to a clinician.

Move out of the sun, cool the skin with a damp cloth or a cool shower, and drink fluids. Apply a bland moisturiser or Emollient Therapy to intact skin while it is slightly damp. Avoid ice directly on skin, scrubbing, fragranced products, and further tanning. Cover the area with loose clothing and leave peeling skin attached rather than pulling it away. A clinician may advise treatment such as Topical Corticosteroids for selected inflammation; do not start one without guidance.

Get urgent medical help for extensive blistering, severe pain, confusion, faintness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or signs of infection such as worsening warmth, pus, and fever. Seek advice if the reaction involves the eyes or if the skin is not settling.

Ask whether the bumps are blisters or a light-sensitive rash, how to protect the area while it heals, which moisturiser is suitable, and whether any medicine is appropriate.
