Bumpy Rash Under the Arm: What to Know

Deodorant, fragrance, shaving products, adhesive, or fabric may cause Contact Dermatitis. Heat and sweat can create Heat Rash, while moisture and skin-on-skin friction may produce Intertrigo. Atopic Dermatitis can affect the fold with itch and dryness. A Drug Rash can appear after a new medicine and may extend beyond the underarm. Tender warmth, drainage, or a rapidly enlarging area raises concern for infection and needs assessment.

Gently wash and pat the fold dry. Pause new deodorants, fragrances, shaving, and other products until the skin settles. Wear loose clothing, change after sweating, and avoid scratching. Do not squeeze bumps or share towels. If the rash followed a new medicine, contact the prescribing clinician promptly rather than stopping important treatment on your own.

Seek urgent help for breathing trouble, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, blistering, peeling skin, severe pain, or purple spots. Arrange prompt care for fever, pus, increasing warmth, marked tenderness, red streaks, or rapid spread. A recurring underarm rash, a painful lump, or a rash that does not improve with gentle care should be examined.

Ask whether the fold pattern suggests Intertrigo, whether a product or medicine is responsible, whether infection testing is needed, and how to prevent moisture-related flares.
