What should you know about bullous lichen planus oral?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition in which the immune system contributes to changes in the skin or mucous membranes. In the mouth, delicate blisters may break quickly and leave sore raw areas. The cheeks, gums, tongue, lips, or palate may be involved. Some people also notice fine white lines or patches around the sore areas, while others mainly experience burning and tenderness.

Mouth sores have several possible causes, so an examination is needed to distinguish lichen planus from infection, trauma, medication reactions, or another inflammatory disorder. A clinician may review medicines, inspect the mouth and skin, and sometimes arrange further testing when the appearance is unclear or symptoms persist.

Choose soft, cool foods and drink regularly if chewing or swallowing is uncomfortable. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, very hot drinks, and foods that are spicy, acidic, salty, or rough because they can sting exposed tissue. Use a soft toothbrush and clean gently; tell your dentist about the sores so dental care can be adapted without irritating them. Do not peel blister roofs or use unprescribed mouth treatments that may worsen inflammation.

Treatment depends on the areas involved and the severity of symptoms. A clinician may prescribe a topical corticosteroid preparation for mouth lesions, while oral corticosteroid treatment or another approach may be considered when inflammation is extensive. Follow the prescribed instructions and report new symptoms rather than changing treatment yourself.

Seek prompt medical care if mouth pain prevents drinking, swallowing becomes difficult, breathing feels affected, or swelling develops around the lips or throat. Arrange an assessment for bleeding that does not settle, rapidly worsening sores, fever, pus-like drainage, or signs of dehydration such as dizziness and very dark urine. Persistent or recurring oral ulcers also deserve review, particularly when there is a new lump, a firm area, or a change that does not heal.
