What should you know about a bug bite looking rash?

Small itchy bumps can occur after contact with insects, but similar bumps may appear with contact dermatitis, heat rash, or atopic dermatitis. Scabies can cause intense itching, often worse at night, with bumps or thin lines in areas such as the finger webs, wrists, waist, or armpits. Ringworm tends to form an enlarging, scaly ring rather than separate bites. A new medicine can also trigger a drug rash, while psoriasis may create thicker, scaly patches.

Notice whether lesions are grouped, arranged in a line, limited to exposed skin, or appearing in areas covered by clothing. Record when they started, recent travel, new products, pets, medicines, and whether anyone close to you is itchy.

Gently wash the skin and use a cool, damp cloth for short periods. Avoid scratching, fragranced products, and suspected plants, fabrics, or detergents. Keep nails short and do not share towels or bedding if scabies or ringworm is possible. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an anti-itch product is suitable for the affected area and your age. Arrange an assessment if the rash persists, keeps returning, or cannot be linked to a clear exposure.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, faintness, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. Get prompt medical advice if the rash is painful, blistering, infected-looking, associated with fever, involves the eyes or mouth, or began soon after a new medicine. A clinician should also assess a spreading rash, extensive skin peeling, or severe itch that prevents sleep.
