Brown spots on skin from sun exposure

Ultraviolet light can signal pigment-producing cells to make more melanin. This may create flat tan-to-brown patches on the face, hands, shoulders, or other exposed areas. Colour can deepen with further exposure, and pigment may also remain after sunburn or inflammation. A sun-exposed location does not prove that a spot is harmless; shape, border, surface, symptoms, and evolution matter.

Choose shade, tightly woven clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, and broad-spectrum sunscreen for exposed skin. Reapply sunscreen as directed on its label, especially after swimming or sweating.
