Brown spots on skin and diabetes: what to know

Some people with diabetes develop darker, velvety skin in body folds, or smooth brown patches on the shins. These patterns differ from an isolated mole, a healing mark, or pigment left after a rash. Dryness, scratching, fungal irritation, and minor injuries may also leave dark areas. The appearance does not show whether blood glucose is controlled and cannot confirm diabetes without appropriate medical testing.

If you have diabetes, keep routine appointments and mention a new or persistent mark to the clinician managing your health.
