What should you know about brown spots after sex?

Sexual activity can make an existing mark more noticeable through warmth, rubbing, or temporary redness. Repeated friction, shaving, waxing, or a product reaction may inflame skin and leave darker colour as it settles. Pimples, folliculitis, razor bumps, acne, hormonal acne, perioral dermatitis, and rosacea are different patterns that can leave post-inflammatory pigment, although not all are related to sex. The exact site matters: external skin, the groin, and mucosal tissue have different causes.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Pause products that sting and avoid scrubbing, picking, or hair removal until the skin is comfortable. Reduce friction with a suitable lubricant and breathable clothing. Do not put bleaching agents or acne acids on genital or mucosal skin unless a clinician specifically advises it. If a new condom, lubricant, or cleanser preceded the change, record the product and stop it while seeking advice.

Arrange a review for persistent or recurrent marks, or for itching, burning, cracks, blisters, ulcers, pus, bleeding, pain with urination, unusual discharge, or pelvic or genital pain. Seek urgent care for severe swelling, rapidly worsening pain, fever, or trouble passing urine. A dark mark that changes shape or colour should be examined rather than treated cosmetically.
