What should you know about brown fungal spots on skin?

A fungal rash may produce patches with fine scale, mild itch, or a change in colour, often on areas that become warm or sweaty. Brown colour can remain after inflammation settles, so a mark may not be actively infected. Pimples and follicle inflammation can also leave brown marks; acne, Folliculitis, and Razor Bumps are possible alternatives. A clinician may examine scale and distribution, and may test skin scrapings when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Keep the area clean and dry, change out of damp clothing, and avoid sharing towels or clothing. Do not use steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash because it can alter the appearance and allow infection to spread. Use treatment recommended for the diagnosed cause and follow the full directions. If bumps dominate rather than patches, your clinician may consider Acne or other follicle-related problems. Avoid picking, which can deepen leftover pigment.

Arrange an assessment if the patches spread, recur, become painful, ooze, or fail to improve with appropriate care. Seek prompt medical help for fever, rapidly worsening redness, facial or eye involvement, or a weakened immune system. A persistent brown mark without scale may need a different evaluation rather than repeated antifungal products.
